Sharp is planning to split-off its display business on October 1, according to Japanese media SankeiBiz.

The newly formed wholly owned subsidiary will be called Sharp Display Technology, or SDTC.

SDTC will be based in Kameyama. Sharp believes having a separate company will be more advantageous to secure funding for the development of microLED technology, SankeiBiz said.

Sharp last month purchased JDI’s liquid crystal display (LCD) factory. The company will use unused areas of the factory to development and produce microLED.

Unused space at the factory at Hakusan was equivalent in area to the LCD line there dedicated to Apple.

Sharp also plans to move the LCD equipment at Kameyama to Hakusan. It will lend the equipment to Apple.

Kameyama factory will be changed to a line focused on panel supply for automobile and medical devices.

Sharp reportedly bought the Hakusan factory from Apple’s request to do so. It purchased the factory for US$390 million.

Sharp’s display business accounts for 30% of its sales.
